Johnny Rockets was one of the things that I was most excited about trying when I cruised with Royal Caribbean for the first time. I had heard great things about the burgers and hotdogs!
What is Johnny Rockets?
Johnny Rockets is a 50s inspired diner, famous for its milkshakes and burgers. You’ll find Johnny Rockets on most Royal Caribbean ships although the layout/style of the restaurant does vary by ship. The cost of the restaurant also changes depending on which ship you are on.
We don’t have Johnny Rockets in the UK but they are a ‘real’ restaurant that you can eat in on land. They have over 300 restaurants worldwide but I honestly thought it was just a Royal Caribbean thing until this Royal Caribbean cruise.
What does it cost?
What it costs depends on what cruise ship you are on. We cruised on the Independence of the Seas which is one of the ‘older’ ships. On the ‘older’ ships you are charged one flat rate of $6.95, after that you can eat as much as you want.
On the ‘newer’ ships (quantum class+) you are charged per item which could get expensive…
How does it work?
Johnny Rockets is operated on a first come first serve basis. You arrive as you would for a restaurant on land, (whenever you feel hungry), and are seated. We decided to sit outside and watch the world go by.
You’ll have to sign the bill/check/receipt at the end of the meal and the charge will then be added to your onboard account. Easy peasy!
The dancing waiters!
The waiters do spontaneously burst into dance. During the time that we were there the waiters did a dance inside (I peaked in through the window) and then they did one outside for us. I’m not really sure of the schedule of the dancing, it is totally possible to go the Johnny Rockets and not see any dancing at all (my parents managed this on this cruise).
It is very silly and funny, I would HATE to have to dance if I was a waiter but all the waiters looked relatively happy to me. They must know the words and dance moves very well by the end of their cruising season.

We had some onion rings and chips (fries) for starters. I think the idea is that you get a couple of items for the table to share although I see no reason why you couldn’t order the whole menu. (Apart from the fact that it may not fit in your stomach.)
The ketchup also comes in a smiley face which is apparently a Johnny Rockets thing.
For main I had a burger, as did Jono. They do have a vegetarian burger too which is good.
Johnny Rockets are famous for their ice creams and milkshakes. I’m intolerant to dairy so these weren’t a fabulous option for me. You might notice though that I have ice cream on my plate? I didn’t order that. I ordered an apple pie and the ice cream came with, being the awkward British person that I am I just decided to just leave the ice cream on the corner of the plate…
Design of the restaurant
The layout of the restaurant depends on the ship. They all are designed to look like classic 1950’s American diners.

Would I recommend Johnny Rockets?
Yes! It was a bit of fun and made a change from dining in the main dining room. I didn’t feel that the service charge was too high and we did both come away really full. I would recommend that you go at more of a peak time though, to try and maximise your chance of seeing some dancing. All very strange!
The rest of the Independence of the Seas:
I have recently returned from a little 5-night cruise onboard the Independence of the seas. It was my first Royal Caribbean cruise and I loved it! The Independence was gorgeous. Full ship review here. We stayed in an inside cabin (no surprise there). Inside cabin review here.
I’ve been nominated as favourite cruise blogger in the Wave awards and it would mean SO much to me if I could have your vote.
(I run this blog in my spare time and work full time in a non-cruising industry so I feel extremely lucky to have been nominated at all). It only takes 30 seconds to do and you don’t have to fill in any of the other categories if you don’t want to.
If I could vote for you as best cruise blog readers I would!! It means more to me than you could ever know!
