There are many people who will not considering cruising as a holiday option. Some have very valid reasons but others never want to cruise due to some rather wacky beliefs! Pirates, Icebergs, the Bermuda triangle and more. I could write a whole book on this topic but below I have just listed some of the reasons which I find the craziest.

People genuinely believe that the cruise ship could crash into an iceberg and sink. We definitely have one ship/film to blame for this one, Titanic. The Titanic sank in 1912, that’s over 100 years ago. Ship building and safety has improved immensely over the last 100 years. You wouldn’t base any other decisions on disasters which happened over 100 years ago, things were very very different. Cruise somewhere hot if you’re that worried ;D.

2. The Bermuda triangle.

There are some people who are surprised that cruise ships go through the Bermuda triangle. I have been through the triangle and lived to tell the tale! Cruise ships go through there everyday and apart from the occasional storm or bit of bad weather cruise ships don’t run into any trouble there. Some people seem to worry that their cruise ship will disappear but I’m pretty sure that if thousands people were regularly disappearing into the triangle we would be hearing about it.

3. Its like a ferry.

No no no no no. Cruise ships are huge! Some people seem to think that being on a cruise ship would be like being stuck on a cargo boat or a ferry. Cruising couldn’t be further from this. Most cruise ships which I go on are over 14 floors high and about 1/3 of a mile around. This may be one of those things which you just cannot understand unless you have been on a cruise ship. They’re like a floating resort or city.Norwegian Spirit

4. Norovirus.

This one is maybe not as crazy as the others but still seems to me to be a little bit mad. Cruise ships are one of the cleanest places you will ever be in. Everything is sanitised and cleaned constantly. Because of the number of people on board there is of course a risk of illness, but I feel that the cleanliness of the ship more than makes up for it. I personally feel a lot more at risk of getting ill in my office than on a cruise ship. In an office there are a lot of people coughing and sneezing. Nobody makes sure hands are sanitised or washed in an office.

5. The ship will crash/sink.

This may have been founded by the sinking of the Costa Concordia in 2012. Some people don’t understand how rare this is! The is the only incidence I can think of in my lifetime. You’re so much more likely to be injured in a car crash or simply just fall over and die. The sinking of the Costa Concordia was entirely due to the negligence of the captain, if anything, due to the accident cruise ships should be safer now, with captains more aware of the dangers of straying from the predetermined route.

6. Pirates!

DeckI can honestly say that I have never worried about pirates when have been on a cruise. Cruise lines don’t really cruise into pirate infested waters (the worst place seeming to be the Gulf of Aden between the Yemen and Somalia). Regardless of this cruise ship staff are trained to deal with such events and have a number of measures in place to protect against the threat of pirates. In general most pirates would find it hard to attack cruise ships which carry thousands of people, for a start they have to try and climb up the sides of the ship. A guest on a traditional cruise route does not have to worry about pirates!

7. Falling off the ship.

People don’t seem to realise how difficult it is to ‘fall off’ the cruise ship. There are railings around every part of the ship. The most dangerous area is the balcony where the railing is about chest height. You still would have to go to quite a lot of effort to climb over it and fling yourself into the sea. People don’t just ‘fall off’ cruise ships. They usually are drunk and doing something mad like trying to climb from one balcony to the next! There are way too many crazy reasons why people don’t considering cruising as an option. I think I may have to write some more about this topic as personally I find it fascinating! Do you know anybody who believes any of these things? Let me know in the comments 🙂
